Red Sun Academy

Red Sun Academy

School  of  Martial Arts

Red Sun Academy first opened its doors in 1989.  Our style is JO KWON CHI, which is a blend of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Turkish styles.

What makes Red Sun unique is 3 things:

One, we are different from karate, incorporating the soft (Tai Chi), where students use technique and leverage instead of using only their strength.  Students learn to rely on an inner strength with knowledge of proper body mechanics, and they learn to utilize their core instead of “muscling it”.  Also, we utilize the angles derived from our Turkish style, which gives our students advantage.

Two, our price is about half of what some of the commercial schools charge, and we don’t require contracts.

Three, the instructors go well out of their way to share their knowledge, often giving their own personal time freely to individual students.

Red Sun Academy offers many extras other than martial art training, where students and instructors attend fun outside events such as dinners, picnics, movies, hikes, parties, day trips to the lake, and weekend retreats.

Jo Kwon Chi is a most unique martial art.  In our style, instead of only blocking force against force, we also divert an attack.  We teach ways to ensure that your face/body isn’t in a striker’s path!   Students learn to ground, neutralize, and use leverage and technique.

Our style is Jo Kwon Chi.

Jo Kwon Chi is a blend

of several styles:

Karate (Shotokan)

Tae Kwon Do

Tai Chi

Sayokan (a Turkish style)

It began in 1989.

That's when we had our very first class.

The photo above shows one of our classes when the academy was only three months old.

We train not only

in the physical aspects

of the martial arts,

but also as a way of life.

What makes us unique is the heart we put in our school.  We also train in wonderful ways, including excursions to the beach.

Sensei is a 5th degree black belt and was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame.

She has experience in over 7 styles and has published a book on the philosophies of the martial arts.

Outside interests include art, books, history, and dogs.

It is sad to see what is happening to many martial art schools.  Many are becoming strictly commercial.

We are not a commercial school.

We do not believe in contracts.

We do not have small children running around with black belts.

We do not promote too quickly or too easily.

We have not turned what is beautiful into strictly a money-making business.

Here at Red Sun, the art of the martial arts is of most importance.

Here at Red Sun Academy, students are like family.

We become very close when we train together and support each other.  Also, it's nice to see many families train together.

Soft does not mean weak.  Water is soft and is yielding,

but water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. Water can carve mountains.

That which is soft and yielding will overcome that which is rigid and hard.  Soft is strong.

~Lao Tzu

Here at Red Sun Academy,

we blend the soft with the hard to yield greater power.  Many schools focus only on the YANG.  We also train with YIN.
