ROUND ROBIN SPARRING
4 CORNER JUDGES
.....The first time a student doesn't use a combination, he sits.
CREATE THE OPENING
.....Partner up. Create the opening on your opponent!
.....Strike high repeatedly to get opponent's hands up,
.....then strike ribs fast!
.....Or, kick low, kick low, kick low
.....(until opponent's guard is low),
.....then strike high quickly!
.....Work on circling around your opponent instead of backing up.
.....(upper rank can hold blockers to sparrers.
.....If hit, the person sparring must sit)
.....Two up at a time. Spar, emphasizing crystal clear technique.
.....Those sitting should be able to identify each strike and block.
.....CONTEST: Who has the best technique. Those sitting judge. Eliminations
"SEE THE OPENING" DRILL (for beginners)
.....Teacher stands behind student who is sparring
.....(usually a beginner student).
.....Teacher calls out areas where the opponent is open
.....(example - left ribs, right headgear).
.....Student strikes as fast as possible.
Two up at a time sparring. Everyone sitting are judges. Eliminate those who:
.....1. Drop their hands
.....2. Have poor technique
.....3. Don't have good control
.....4. Don't use a combination within 10 seconds
Those who are sitting (the judges) can be divided up in 4 groups, each group judging one thing.
For example, white belts watch for dropping hands. Yellow & orange watch for technique, etc.
.....Have brown & black belts spar multiple opponents.
.....This will move things along faster.
.....As a class, have a white belt name a strike (hand or foot).
.....Have a yellow or orange belt add a strike.
.....Teacher decides if it flows. Everyone do the 2 strikes.
.....Keep on having ad advanced student add a strike
.....until about 8 or so moves.
.....CONTEST: Who can remember the most moves.
.....Pair up. Spar, using this combo.
TEACHING COMBINATION STRIKES
.....Teacher calls A (A does a 3-move combo)
.....or B (B does a 3-move combo)
.....Teacher calls A or B haphazardly.
.....Next, A or B must score a point (contact).
.....Whoever loses does one push-up. Eliminations.
Partner up. Both wear gloves and chest protector.
.....1. Front hand behind back at all times.
.....2. Must expose stomach except when avoiding attack.
.....3. Cannot switch feet
.....WAYS TO AVOID ATTACK:
.....1. Step back
.....2. Twist at hip
.....3. Block or Perry
.....The trick is to know when your opponent is strong or weak.
.....When he is strong,
.....keep out of kicking range from your opponent
.....& maintain distance.
.....When he is weak or overextended,
.....close in distance and attack quickly.
.....Teacher asks student where exactly he was attacking?
.....If you answer the face, that answer is not acceptable.
.....Answer must be specific, like the left ear or this point right here.
READ YOUR OPPONENT
.....Two up at a time.
.....Teacher stops fight at times,
.....asking students how opponent reacted to a specific strike.
.....Those.watching on red mats can help.
