S P A R R I N G ..C O M B I N A T I O N S

Down block opponent's hand, back fist to headgear (all with right hand)

Block with lead hand, Reverse punch (face or stomach).

Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercut, Hook

Block / Punch / Reverse Shuto combo

Jab, Cross, Frontkick (back leg)

Jab, Cross, Round (back leg), Hook

Round kick, Shuto, Punch

Side kick, Back fist, Punch

Slide side kick, back fist

Front foot Front kick, Side kick

Round / Side (with same foot)

Jab, Round, Reverse-Punch

Low-high Round (or Side)

Front kick, Punch, Punch

Front hand down-parry, Backhand down-parry, Front hand back-fist

(similar to above). Lead-hand down parry with palm. Other hand rolls to back-fist. Lead backfist.

Look for the opening & attack drill

(Create opening) Several jabs to get opponent blocking their face, then quick reverse punch to ribs.

(Diagonals) Move to left or right in one step instead of backing up.

If opponent's hands drop, clock him lightly on the headgear.

Only use 3 combination strikes, never just one.

Punches - Make sure punches start from body, quickly strike, and return to body.

Block/Punch combo. Advance students: block & punch simultaneously.

Hands only, but only use back (reverse) hand.

Kicks only, but no round kicks.

Front hand punch to face, back hand immediately punch to stomach

Round kick, spin side (have white belts do two round kicks) (yellow + only)

Round / Hook (with same foot) (orange + only)

Round / Spin Hook (with other foot) (green + only)

Round / Spinning Back Fist (brown belts + only)

SPARRING FOOTWORK DRILLS

First, do steps by themselves, then with their combination strikes

BASIC STEP FORWARD (moving front foot first) combine with round kick

BASIC STEP BACK (moving back foot first) combine with punch or double punch

CROSS STEP FORWARD (moving back foot first) combine with front kick

CROSS STEP BACK (moving front foot first) combine with inside block / punch

STEP DIAGONALLY TO LEFT combine with reverse punch

STEP DIAGONALLY TO RIGHT combine with side kick

ADVANCED FOOTWORK DRILLS

(perhaps have students only punch so they can concentrate more on their footwork)

1. Slide front foot forward, causing back foot to slide forward (facing same way). Strike (punch).

2. Step back with back foot, then other foot slides back. Strike (front foot front kick).

3. Slide back foot up to front foot (t-stance). Strike (front foot).

4. Slide front foot back to back foot (t-stance). Strike (front foot side kick).

5. Back foot steps forward (facing other way). Strike.

6. Front foot steps back (facing other way). Strike.

7. Both feet slide forward (facing same side) (feet stay parallel). Strike.

8. Both feet slide back (facing same side) (feet stay parallel). Strike.

9. Switch feet (facing other way). Lean back. Strike.

10. Double switch. (to break opponent's rhythm) Strike.

11. Back foot moves 450 (facing left or right). Strike.

12. Turn 1800, moving back foot forward. Look before moving. Strike with other foot for momentum.

*13. (to confuse opponent) Switch, then turn 1800, moving back foot forward. Strike with other foot.

*14. Taking little steps, front foot comes back, back foot comes forward (facing same side).

Step forward w/ back foot. Strike with other foot. (psyches opponent)

15. (responding to quick attack from opponent) Front foot slides back to back foot (facing same way).

Back foot slides back, sliding front foot back. Strike.

16. Hop forward while rear foot front kick. Strike with other foot.

17. (difficult) Slide forward, hop front kick with front foot. Hop round with back foot.

CIRCLING DRILL

.....Work on circling around your opponent instead of backing up.
.....(upper rank can hold blockers to sparrers.

"SEE THE OPENING" DRILL (for beginners)

.....Teacher stands behind student who is sparring
.....(usually a beginner student).
.....Teacher calls out areas where the opponent is open
.....(example - left ribs, right headgear).
.....Student strikes as fast as possible.

SPARRING CONTES

Two up at a time sparring. Everyone sitting are judges. Eliminate those who:

.....1. Drop their hands
.....2. Have poor technique
.....3. Don't have good control
.....4. Don't use a combination within 10 seconds

Those who are sitting (the judges) can be divided up in 4 groups, each group judging one thing.
For example, white belts watch for dropping hands. Yellow & orange watch for technique, etc.

MULTIPLE ATTACKERS

.....Have brown & black belts spar multiple opponents.
.....This will move things along faster.

.....As a class, have a white belt name a strike (hand or foot).
.....Everyone do.
.....Have a yellow or orange belt add a strike.

.....Keep on having ad advanced student add a strike
.....until about 8 or so moves.
.....CONTEST: Who can remember the most moves.
.....Pair up. Spar, using this combo.

FOCUS
