KATA

===============================================================================

KATA - advanced students do kata with tonfa or sai

===============================================================================

KATA - invented kata

Black belts do their invented kata

===============================================================================

KATA - reverse order

Only black belts up. Do invented kata. Then black belt kata. Then add brown belts. Etc.

===============================================================================

KATA - in slow motion

Do kata in slow motion, iso-kinetically (with muscle)

===============================================================================

KATA - stations, then learn from advanced students

White belts do kata, then go to stations.

Yellow belts do kata, then go to stations. Etc.

By the time brown belts come, everyone sit & watch.

===============================================================================

KATA - drills (everyone, even white belts do)

(from white belt kata)

Down block, step forward punch with power and intense speed.

Do this in all directions (coming forward, to the left & right, and turning)

(from yellow belt kata)

The turns from the kata, after right foot forward, right hand upward block.

You then turn to your right employing an outside block with right hand. Left foot is forward.

You then turn 1800 and employ an outside block with left hand. Right foot is forward.

(from orange belt kata)

1. Shuto strike in back stance, step forward to elbow strike with other hand.

Partner up on this one so student understands application

(make sure that one hand is a fist and one hand is open covering the fist in elbow strike)

2. Back foot side kick, same hand grabs opponent behind his neck and into arm

Partner up on this one so student understands application

(difficult to explain, move is from orange belt kata after the upward block)

(from green belt kata)

The first 3 moves of green belt kata.

The 3 moves of green belt kata after the two diagonal shuto strikes (block, kick, punch).

===============================================================================

KATA - add a strike

Add a strike after each ki-ai (or after teacher ki-ai's).

Add a strike after each block (if two blocks are employed together, add a strike after 2nd block)

===============================================================================

KATA - self-defense applications

Have students pair up and choose a self-defense move from their kata.

Call up students to demonstrate (one pair at a time) to the class.

===============================================================================

KATA - aerobic workout

Do quickly as a class. Aerobic workout.

===============================================================================

KATA - critique

One or a few students do their kata. Everyone watching critiques

===============================================================================

NON-STOP KATA

Do non-stop kata (no break between katas). When lower ranks finish their kata, work on STATIONS

===============================================================================

MIXED UP KATA

Do White Belt Kata, only where there's down blocks, do upward blocks.

Do Yellow Belt Kata, only do palm heels instead of punches, and do side kicks instead of front kicks.

Do Orange Belt Kata, only swap inside blocks for outside blocks & outside blocks for inside blocks.

===============================================================================

KATA - highest ranking student leads the class

Teacher works with white belts as highest ranking student leads the class thru the katas.

===============================================================================

KATA - solid front stance

As students do kata, have students try to push over students doing kata while they're in front stance.

===============================================================================

KATA - select the most difficult parts

EVERYONE UP. Select the most difficult turn of WHITE BELT KATA & do over & over again.

White belts sit.

Select the most difficult turn of YELLOW BELT KATA and do over and over again. YW sit.

Select the most difficult part of ORANGE BELT KATA and repeat and repeat. Etc.

===============================================================================

KATA - no one sits

1. All students do NEW AGE KATA.

2. Highest purple or blue ranked students leads others in white belt kata as Sensei works with

brown and black belt students in strikes with a weapon.

3. That purple or blue ranked student works off to the side with white belts as next highest student

leads the group in yellow belt kata. Sensei continues with advanced students & weapons.

4. Next highest student works with yellow belts off to the side on spin side & jumping front snap.

Highest purple still works with white belts. Sensei now leads everyone in orange belt kata.

Advanced students join in.

5. Sensei continues with green, blue, purple, browns, & black belt kata, quickly.

After you've done your kata, instead of sitting, go off and practice either solo or with a partner or

the bag.

6. Everyone sits and watches black belts do their invented kata, all at once time.

===============================================================================

KATA - exhale with each strike & look before turning

WHITE BELTS ONLY ON THE FLOOR. Each white belt is assigned a partner who watches to make sure white belts sharply exhale with each strike (kicks too). Also, look before they turn.

YELLOW BELTS ONLY ON THE FLOOR. Same thing.

ORANGE BELTS, same thing.

Also - check power, don't bounce up & down (head even), and relax, ending in power.

===============================================================================

KATA - look before turning

4 (or so) students up at a time, each matched with an advanced student.

The 4 students will each do their kata on Sensei's count as the advanced students will hold up a certain amount of fingers (or mitt to strike) in the direction the student is to turn. The student must call out how many fingers (or strike at the mitt) before moving.

This will get them to look before they move.

===============================================================================

KATA - don't bounce up & down

As students do kata, have advanced students hold blocker a half an inch over their head at all times.

===============================================================================

CORRECTIONS FROM REPORT CARDS - kata

Work individually with student from their past Report Card

===============================================================================

BLIND KATA

Do kata blindfolded or with eyes shut

===============================================================================

FOCUSED KATA

One rank on the floor at a time doing their kata as others try to distract by yelling.

===============================================================================

KATA - feet only / hands only

Do kata - feet only. Do kata - hands only (this is more difficult)

===============================================================================

KATA - water element

Stress water (flowing) element.

===============================================================================

KATA - elements of form

EARTH clean technique

WIND quick & breezy movement

FIRE explosive & dynamic

WATER flowing, fluid

1. Teacher calls out an element, and students do form accordingly.

2. Have advanced students guess which element student is doing.

3. Students do their form, and teacher and/or advanced students say what element is needed.

===============================================================================

KATA - do kata repeatedly, working on these elements

1. Breathe during every strike (especially kicks)

2. Power

3. Relax during the entire kata, ending in power.

4. Keep head even. Don't bounce up and down. (Top of hair almost touches roof of cave)

5. Water element (flow)

===============================================================================

KATA LIKE ONE-STEP SPARRING

One person (who does his kata) with an attacker next to him.

Teacher calls out what move attacker does, the ki-ai's to execute attacker to strike.

Kata person blocks and counters.

===============================================================================

NOTE THAT KATA IS SELF-DEFENSE

Ask a different student each time “Do the first move of white belt kata.”

Then “Do the first move of yellow belt kata.” Then, “Do the first move of orange belt kata.” Etc.

Note that all katas begin with a block. That is because of the martial art philosophy that we never initiate a fight. We never throw the first punch. We only use our martial arts for self-defense.

===============================================================================

WHITE BELT KATA - substituting down block

1. Everyone does white belt kata, only instead of down blocks, do upward blocks.

2. Do the kata again, only now substitute inside blocks.

3. Do the kata again, only now substitute outside blocks.

4. Do the kata one last time, only do all 4 blocks before the punch.

===============================================================================

KATA - form building

Do 1st move of kata, stop, go back to junbi. Do first 2 moves, stop, go back to junbi.

Do 1st 3 moves, etc. Repeat if anyone errors. Those who just received new rank are learning moves. Teacher correct technique of those who already know kata.

===============================================================================

KATA - pillow talk

3 or 4 students up at a time, trying to do their kata while balancing a pillow on their head.

When the pillow falls, they sit down.

===============================================================================

KATA - with blocker

Teacher attacks appropriately with blocker as students do their kata, teacher's count.

===============================================================================

KATA - breathe during kicks

Go through the katas, making sure students breathe during every strike, ESPECIALLY KICKS!!

===============================================================================

KATA – belt by belt

WHITE BELTS: See that hand is chambered high and tightly.

YELLOW BELTS: See that they look before they change direction.

ORANGE BELTS: Breathe with each strike, including kicks.

GREEN BELTS: Foot angle is correct on all kicks.

BLUE BELTS: Each move starts with relaxation, ends with power.

PURPLE BELTS: Execute each strike at lighting speed. Absolutely NO wobble after strike.

BROWN & BLACK: All of the above.

===============================================================================
